"Yeah, ok," he said, only half paying attention. He pushed his chair out and got up, walking off. He was lost in his own thoughts yet, about what he could do, about what would be crossing a line that he couldn't cross.
But he didn't know what to do next. He always knew...just not today.

Jess watched him go... then turned around and set off in the complete opposite direction. Privately, she wondered how much of a waste of time this had been. Nothing had been resolved and a lot of problems had been made worse. And to top that all off, she still had no idea why she had bothered to stick around and try to help Thoma.
She shut her brain off and started walking. Thinking would get her nowhere.

A day later, Thoma still had nothing. He was looking at news on his laptop, thinking, trying to figure out anything he could while he sifted through news, instead of wasting time with television news.
He stopped and rose abruptly, his chair crashing to the floor. He pulled out his phone and dialed for Jessica.

After several moments of being sought out and told that there was a phone call, Jessica finally arrived at the front desk. Half of her was expecting it to be Thoma begging for forgiveness, the other half was expecting it to be the beginning of a police sting and that she'd be swamped with cops the moment that she said anything.
Regardless of which it was, there was only one way to find out. She reached the front desk and picked up the receiver, took a deep breath, and then said: "Hello?"

"We have a problem." That was simple. The next part was hard for him to say, hard for him to accept, "Kaito is out of prison. Seems he has some very high friends, or enough money to pay them off. I need to see you."

Jess stopped as that news hit her ear. Oh, for love of... What was she now, some sort of crutch? She resisted the urge to light into a longwinded lecture against Thoma. Instead she calmed herself, forcibly, and then tried to speak slowly and surely.
"That's great." She said, her voice thick with sarcasm. She then sobered. "Thoma, I understand how you feel, but if this is... related to what you said last night. I can't help you. I won't be a part of a vendetta."

"I'm calling you to tell you to leave Japan. I wanted to do it in person, to give you help, but I'll just cut straight to it. No vendetta, by the way," he said, a bit irritated that that was brought up again, "It's just safer for you if you go. Kaito is smart; he'll figure out who you are and come for you.
"He's like me, except he is violent. He'll murder to get what he wants."

Jess had to fight hard to keep the annoyance out of her voice. Healthy caution was one thing, but this was rapidly ratcheting up to the level of paranoia.
"Thoma... He doesn't even know who I am. I used a really lame alias, remember? I didn't touch anything in his cell. Sure, there's probably a picture on a security camera somewhere, but that's not going to do him any good if he can't track it. And I'm not exactly a big fry or anything."
Too late, she thought to look around and make sure that she wasn't being spied on. There didn't seem to be anyone around... thus far, thus good.

"Those informants you found? He's been out a few hours, and I'm sure he has them already, or he's closing in on them to get them to identify you. Any alias you gave he'll have, and he'll figure it all out. He'll come for me soon, too," he wasn't being paranoid. He knew how this man worked, "You have to trust me."

"They don't know who I am either. I think that you're the only one who knows my real name." Jess continued scanning the lobby as she spoke. "And it's not like I ever really re-use an alias, so I don't know what good that that would do. Unless he's bugged your phone, and so help me, I will slap you again if you start getting paranoid about that now."
A crazy idea was beginning to form in her mind. It wasn't the greatest of ideas, but... it was entirely possible to work. She entertained the notion of tossing it out for a second, just to see how Thoma would respond. In the end, she decided to go for it.
"... Maybe this is a good thing. Maybe I can be the bait used to get some real dirt on him."

He wasn't concerned about a bug, "No. I'm not going to let you put your life in danger like that," he told her, putting his foot down on it. He left his apartment and started going down the street, making his way to...he wasn't sure where.

"Well, according to you. I already am." Jess pointed out. "We might as well get some good out of it. Besides, its not like I'm some helpless toddler or anything. I can hold my own."
He had no idea, really.
