"Alright, that tears it!" Thoma had just pushed her too far. Jess didn't care who heard her now.
She grabbed him by the front of his suit and then did actually go through with leveling a slap on his cheek. Jess hesitated for a bare instant before laying another one on him.
"When we started this, you swore to me that this wasn't a vendetta. Well, that certainly smacks of one. Are you even listening to yourself? You're talking about murdering a man in cold blood, using the very thing that got you out of the slammer. Are you just trying to throw your life away or are you just that much of an idiot that you have to go about getting into trouble in order to punish yourself?" Jess shook him for emphasis. "Yuka's gone, Thoma. And if this murdering freak in front of me is the sort of man that she fell in love with, then she was a pretty sorry woman. Is that what you want? Do you want to be the kind of guy that spits in the face of Yuka's memory? If so, then have at it. But I won't be a part of it.
"Now grow up and get a hold of yourself. Can't you see that Kaido's playing you like a dime store harmonica? He wants you to lose control of yourself and try to take him down. Because if you do that, if you go that far, then you've destroyed whatever memory of Yuka you have and you've devolved to his level. He'll have the ultimate laugh because he lived this nice little life of luxury while you go and throw your soul away on his wretched carcass. Some hero you are."
She dearly wanted to just toss Thoma back, switch into Bluejay form, and take off. This wasn't her problem. This wasn't her fight... but for some stupid, stupid reason... she just couldn't. And she didn't know why. And that just... she blinked back tears... that just wasn't fair.

He looked down, not saying anything for a minute, then he looked up into her eyes, "I'm sorry, Jessica. I have to give it to you; you are right. This isn't a vendetta, this isn't supposed to be one, but...that man just pushes me too far. He's playing me, like you said, and I'm falling into it.
"I don't know what to do at this point," he told her, shaking his head, "Killing him is the only thing I have...and I refuse to do that, now that you have me thinking clearly. We can't prove the murders are his doing in the end, so...I don't quite know what to do.
"But what I do know is that I can't go against who I am. I can't let Yuka see me like this, if she still watches me even in death. I have to remember her before I act...or I'm nothing, if I've forgotten the woman I loved...still love..."
He started to walk away; he had nothing more he could say, and he had to get away from the prison so that he could think. Staying here wasn't going to get him anywhere; he needed to be away.

Again, the urge welled up inside of her to just run away. It would be so easy... so simple... She took a few steps... but... her hands closed about Thoma's arm.
"Not this time." Jess said kindly, but firmly. "Last time you went off alone you got yourself in a mes... C'mon, we'll find a cafe or something. Then we can talk it out."

"...yeah, ok," he said, letting her stop him. He sighed and thought for a few moments, "This way," he said, leading her in silence.

Jess nodded and followed after him. After how lucky she'd been in the past several minutes, she wasn't about to push the envelope now. Thoma would talk when he was ready. Until then... he probably just need to walk and not talk.

He found an outdoor cafe and sat down, not pulling her seat out as he normally would have. He leaned forward onto his elbows, lacing his fingers together and looking across.

Jess didn't miss a beat. She pulled the chair out and sat down, then gave the restaurant a good sweep with her eyes. There wasn't anything too suspicious about any of this. No one was sticking out or looked like they were listening in... Seemed like it'd work.
She waited for Thoma to show some sign that he was alive. At the moment, he was looking a little too much like a school principle for her liking. She wanted him to make the first move, to respond to the door that she'd opened for him... if he didn't... then she didn't have any clue what to do.

"I don't know what to do next," he said quietly after a few minutes of silence between them.

"Just talk to me... tell me what's going through your mind." She suggested just to get him talking.

"I'd just be repeating everything I told you at the prison," he told her, "That's all that runs through my head; everything Kaito said, everything I felt after."

Jess took a deep breath, preparing to delve into the world of fly-by-the-seat-of-your-pants psychology. She knew a thing or two about the mind, having dealt with her own trauma through sheer strength of will... but she wasn't so sure how that would translate to someone else.
"Thoma... The mind actually rewrites your memories each time you try to revisit them... which causes all sorts of problems. Eventually, you're going to start seeing things that weren't even there or that you wish could have been... if you keep trying to relive the same moment, then you're going to drive yourself nuts. Trust me... I've been there." It was a start... how much of one, she wasn't sure, but it was a start. That was the important thing.

He looked up at her, "Interesting psychology lesson, but...I'm fine," he said, clearly lying, as he wanted to think about it and not get her on his back. He wanted to think about it and plan his revenge against Kaito, plan what he was going to do.
Then he had to scratch off revenge, as that wasn't it. He wasn't going to kill the man, but he did enjoy thinking about it...

"No, you're not." Jess put her foot down on the false statement. She wasn't going to tolerate that in this discussion. "You're agitated and you're only making yourself worse. You need to break this cycle... otherwise its going to consume you."

He glanced away, not in the mood to talk, "...I need some sleep," he said, despite it still being fairly early.

Alright... well... yeah. It looked like she was going to strike out once again. She sighed and cast a quick glance at the heavens, pleading for help. Why couldn't things that didn't involve illegal activities go her way more often?
She said slowly: "Okay... I'll be around for a day or so. I don't really trust myself to stay any longer than that. Not with the Deka bound to start snooping around because of that little stunt... but... if you change your mind about talking... you're more than welcome to drop by the Dragon."
