Overview:
Renly is a very charismatic individual, sometimes coming off as frivolous to others. Not the most expected choice for a 1st Ranger. He's also very intellectual and enjoys reading.

  History
  
  Royce is one of the bloodlines of Night's Watch. As such, Renly was born to life in the Watch. His brother, Robert, was 1st Ranger, and he never knew his parents, as his mother died giving birth to him, but from what information he could gleam, she worked as a Steward, and his father went into the wall while forcing a breach back inside. As such, Renly was raised in a fairly higher standard of life than the other Rangers in Castle Black. He was prepared for service on the Wall all of his childhood, and trained in the art of swordfighting among the other Rangers. He was dispatched to face his first breach at 13, along with his brother, which they succeeded at defeating.
  
  Once Renly had taken his vows, he was named a Ranger of the Night's Watch and served them until he was 19, when his brother died after being mauled by a boar monster from beyond the Wall. As was Night's Watch tradition, Renly was to succeed Robert as 1st Ranger. However, others challenged him for the position. In Robert's last will, he mentioned Renly would inherit the Ancester, the Royce bloodline's treasure and combat equipment. Renly used the Ancester to defeat those who would take his place, and assumed the mantle of 1st Ranger. Not because he wanted to, but because it was expected of him.

  Renly knelt before the tree in the antechamber of Castle Black, and recited his oath word-for-word. He could feel the eyes of everyone in the room watching him and the others. From the lowliest Initiated to the Lord Commander himself.
  
  "I shall live and die at my post. I am the sword in the darkness. I am the watcher on the walls. I am the fire that burns against the cold, the light that brings the dawn, the horn that wakes the sleepers, the shield that guards the realms of men."
  
  Out of the corner of his eye, he could see Robert watching him intently.
  
  "I pledge my life and honor to the Night's Watch, for this night and all nights to come."
  
  Renly and the others stood up, and the chamber filled with applause. Renly looked to Robert and smiled. Robert smiled back. Renly felt much better after that.
