Description: Standing 6 feet tall at around 150 pounds, Uesugi's physique is incredibly long and lanky, almost comically so. His body appears quite awkward, as if still trying to adjust to his lengthy skeletal system. His choice of attire is typically very simple as he often opts to go with a t-shirt and tattered, faded jeans.
Ranger Stuff
Name: Red Mighty Morphin Ranger ("How does he get this power?" you may ask. Keep reading!)
Team: Mighty Morphin Power Rangers
Morpher /Sequence: Just as his predecessors Jason Lee Scott and Rocky DeSantos before him, Uesugi first announces, "It's morphin' time!" and retrieves his Morpher. He then will then swing his arms in a circular clockwise motion and thrust the Morpher forth while calling out "Tyrannosaurus!"
Description of Ranger Form: Red Mighty Morphin Ranger Red with a white diamond pattern across the chest. The gloves are white with a red diamond pattern stretching across. His helmet is stylized in the form of a T-rex.
Weapons:
- Power Morpher and Tyrannosaurus Power Coin - Imparted to him by the original Red Ranger, Jason Lee Scott. Again, more details will follow in the full biographical history
. - Power Sword - A two-handed, double-bladed weapon with effective slash and stab attack capabilities. Uesugi can unleash a powerful surge of energy from the sword by running his hand along the blade and swinging it.
- Blade Blaster - Small ray gun that can switch to a dagger-like weapon for melee combat.
- Power Crystal - Formed from his Power Coin, the crystal is used to control his Tyrannosaurus Dinozord.
. Zord:
- Tyrannosaurus Dinozord - The mightiest of all the Dinozords. Its jaws, claws and tail can be used in combat. Its special attack is a loud roar that induces a seismic blast in the earth.
- Red Dragon Thunderzord - With the "power of thunder," Uesugi can transform his Tyrannosaurus Dinozord into the Red Dragon Thunderzord. In its Dragon Mode, it can fly and breathe fire. Warrior Mode allows it to engage in hand-to-hand combat as well as wield its staff, which can be spun at high speeds like a helicopter blade.
Inside Stuff
Personality: Uesugi is not exactly the squeaky clean do-gooder of old. In many ways, he's a cynical, selfish, arrogant a-hole who fights for his own reasons and not for some pie-in-the-sky ideal of what is good and right. As prideful as he is, he never backs down from a challenge and fights with the full extent of his heart because he has a compulsive need to prove to others others (and maybe even himself) that he is truly the most powerful and courageous dude around. He also has a knack for showmanship because, again, he's out to prove that his abilities are greater than anyone else's.
Strengths:
- Unyielding belief in his own ability to prevail in any conflict, no matter how dire the circumstances may be.
- Sentai pedigree (in the history!!)
- Being a younger, new generation ranger, he's got speed and athleticism on his side.
Weaknesses:
- There's a fine line between confidence and arrogance, and Uesugi walks that line every battle. Sometimes, he teeters into the realm of cockiness and that drives him to take reckless actions.
- He's got a very short fuse, so this can quickly cause friction between himself and his teammates. In battle, if he becomes frustrated or the opponent wounds his pride, Uesugi may abandon rational strategy and place himself in overly risky situations.
- Easily distracted by the opposite sex. What can he do? He's still a typical 20-year-old male hormonally.
History: Finally, let all be revealed!
Uesugi Date was supposed to have been born into a life in which everything he could ever desire would be provided to him. His father Soichiro made his immense fortune by claiming the patent for silent Velcro (it doesn't make that annoying ripping sound when you pull it apart). However, Uesegi became acquainted with the pangs of loss very early in his life.
One peaceful spring day, while on a peaceful family vacation, he and his sister Mei were playing near a river. Uesugi only averted his gaze for a single moment, but in that brief lapse of attention, Mei had fallen into the water. Uesugi swam furiously to catch up to her as the surging water swept her away. Eventually Uesugi managed to grab hold of her arm and anchor himself on a rock. However, Uesugi lacked the strength to pull her to safety, and she drowned as the current overwhelmed her.
This tragedy convinced Uesugi that life is nothing but a meaningless cycle of accidents and coincidences, none of which can be controlled by lowly human beings. And if such an innocent being like his sister can be taken away so suddenly and without provocation, certainly none of the joy he would experience in the future could last. He eventually left the opulent life of the Date household, feeling that he was unworthy of such comfort if he was incapable of protecting his sister. Lacking the ambition to try to achieve anything meaningful, he bounced around various odd-jobs. He currently works at a takoyaki stand.
And in this existence, he found a strange peace of mind. There was not much his new life had to offer him, but that was the way he wanted it, for that meant there wasn't much for him to lose.
But while it may be easy in the time being for Uesugi to sit back and allow the battle between good and evil to rage around him, what happens when this conflict is so far-reaching that even he would get caught in its wake? What happens when the stakes actually involve something he genuinely cares about? Maybe that's when he learns there is no running away from who he really is.
This marks the beginning of his origin story, Tyranno Rising.

He often woke during the night. It was often something subtle that would shake Uesugi from his slumber. Sometimes, it was the mournful howling of the night wind outside his window. Sometimes, it was the persistent clanging of his creaky radiator. Sometimes, it was the eerie buzzing of the fluorescent light bulb overhanging his bed.
Tonight, it was the girl getting out of his bed. He felt her arm slide across his chest, the slight shift in weight on the mattress as she rolled over, the sudden chill that crawled across his skin as the warmth of her body was taken away.
He was sure to open his eyes slowly. Even at nighttime, he had to be careful to allow his vision to adjust. Maybe the sun never set on the British Empire, but when the sun sets on the concrete and steel megalopolis of Tokyo, it was replaced by a billion neon suns, each of them peddling multivariate wares ranging from ginko biloba energy drinks to used schoolgirl panties. All of them were of disparate colors and hues, but they had a tendency to amalgamate into one hellacious glow that really wreaked havoc on your optical nerves.
Eventually, he's able to make out the delicate silhouette of the girl's slender body as she casually dressed herself. She was actually quite beautiful. Her skin was a pristine milky white, her hair an intense black that cascaded elegantly down her right shoulder as she leaned down to slip her stiletto back onto her foot.
She afforded him a final glance before turning to leave. Her eyes were a vibrant brown, as deep as the Nihonkai. They glimmered with an optimism that the burdens of life had yet to steal from her. She tried to elicit a further reaction from him by offering up a coy grin.
He stares back at her blankly.
She turns to leave, her vibrant brown eyes unlocking from his, her brilliant black hair swinging around. And like that, she leaves his life, just as unceremoniously and innocuously as she had entered it.
