Mission Start [Jessica]

[Thoma Hirako]

"It's not as profitable, or as fun," he told her. That's what mattered to him, at least, in the past. Not so much anymore, where he would have liked that kind of life.

[Jessica Jane]

"Tell me about it." Jess shrugged. "Funny how that works out, but that's society for you. It's a finicky little beast."

[Thoma Hirako]

"Yeah...,"

He had nothing.

[Jessica Jane]

Neither did she. Jess frowned a moment and contemplated their conversation-- or lack thereof. She really wished that this place would hurry up and get here; it would make dealing with Thoma a lot easier. Hmm... what to do...?

"So..." The question died as Jess realized how utterly inappropriate it would have been to joke about girlfriends right now. "Uh... Yeah... wonderful pair we are, huh?"

[Thoma Hirako]

"We make a good team, you and me," he said. Then he retracted, "That is a complete and utter guess, honestly, since we haven't done anything yet. But I'm sure we'll turn out to be good."

[Jessica Jane]

"We better." Jess remarked. "If not, then we're both going to end up in the slammer sooner as opposed to later. If need be, we'll make ourselves work well together."

[Thoma Hirako]

"But forcing cooperation isn't really a good thing, I wouldn't think," Thoma pointed out.

[Jessica Jane]

"You'd be surprised. If you've got a gun to your head, sure, that's a bad thing. But if you and someone else are desperately trying to avoid a mutual fate... you'd be surprised what would be possible." Now she was just flat out making stuff up, but it wasn't in her to just admit she'd been outfoxed.

[Thoma Hirako]

He didn't know that she was just making it up, as it did sound very plausible to him.

"Point taken," he said, "I guess we'll likely make a good team after all, then."

[Jessica Jane]

"Indeed." Jess nodded. "It's sink or swim, and I, for one, prefer to swim."

That was the truth. One didn't make it as far as she did without a lot of determination and plenty of desire to get ahead. She just held on and make things work.

[Thoma Hirako]

"As do I."

With that decided and her determination known, Jess wasn't entirely sure where to take the conversation next. That was the problem with such limited middle ground and her reluctance to open up... she was either snarking or quiet, and one couldn't snark all the time.

[Thoma Hirako]

It took some time, but they arrived outside of the Dekabase. Thoma ran in to check in, and then ran back out into the car, which promptly left.

"Ok, that's taken care of. Now for the hard part; the records," he said, "It'll only take a few minutes to reach the station. I think I can talk us past anyone we meet." He was confident that he could, but he would have to tell lies, not that he had a problem with that. She might, depending on what came up, though.

[Jessica Jane]

Jess waited outside until after Thoma did his work-- there wasn't much sense in her showing face everywhere if she didn't have to. The less she was known, the better she would be able to fill her role. She met up with him after he was checked in and ready to roll.

"Sounds good. I'll keep quiet and let you do the chatting since you know everyone here." Naturally, that meant that she was insulated from failure, to a degree. If everything came apart, then that wouldn't be her problem, but Thoma's responsibility.

[Thoma Hirako]

"Right, makes perfect sense to me," Thoma said as the car stopped again at the department, "Well, here we go."

He was confident that it would work. He was confident in their ability to work as a team and get this done. He opened his door and stepped out, waiting for her before going to the entrance.
