"Yeah, I can see that. Most people don't take the whole 'reformed criminal' route to becoming a Dekaranger." She honestly tried to stop the verbal abuse before it left her, but Jess wasn't quite able to catch it before it slipped out. She sighed and then moved to issue an apology. "Sorry, that was completely uncalled for... I didn't mean to say that."
It quietly infuriated her that she wasn't able to go five minutes without radically insulting someone. She really had changed over the years-- and not in a way that she liked.

He looked at her, "I didn't take that as an insult," he commented. He wasn't being nice, trying to show that he didn't need an apology, he really hadn't taken it as an insult.

"That's good. It would have caused problems, otherwise." That reminder was for herself as much as anything else. Jess was deep in the red in terms of accepting Thoma's hospitality. Insulting your host didn't do much for you. She had to remember that.

"Politics aren't a good way to keep a friendship going," he said. Transcending from partnership to friendship.

Now there was a line she had no idea how to react to. It was true that Thoma had gone well out of his way in order to help her out... but did she actually consider him a friend? Honestly... not really. She didn't have the luxury of friends. She would have thought that Thoma would have picked up on that by now.
"Probably not." It was a noncommittal, and Jess full well knew it.

He did consider her a friend if for no other reason than she was helping him with this. A partner didn't have to stay this long, a partner didn't have to devote so much time for something that could potentially end up being so dangerous.
That she was still here, despite the danger, made him think of her as a friend.
"So...now what?"

"Honestly? I've no idea." Jess responded slowly, because, truthfully, she didn't. "It seems like about that point where we revert to the old 'are we there yet?' schtick."
At this point, she really did wish that they were.

"I'd rather not fall back on that. So...how was your schooling? I mean, did you do college?" he asked her, trying to fill the silence. He didn't want to pry, and she could just not answer, but he decided to ask.

Right... this was about where he started chipping away at her cover story. Or rather, the cover story that she didn't really have. Jess was pretty sure that the only thing Thoma had on her was a fake name... but he could probably still unravel the truth if he just tried.
"I've graduated from the school of hard knocks." She tried to joke while not revealing anything. "That's about it."

He didn't quite get that.
"Ok...I personally went up through high school, and that was about it. No college; I just learned everything on my own, and turned out very well, aside from the whole criminal aspect. But I was already doing that."
Might as well talk about himself, then.

"Heh. Interesting." It was a snider tone than she would have liked, but she was trying to dumb that down. "If you had gone to college, what would you have majored in?"
It was a lot easier to keep Thoma talking about himself. She could live with that.

"Law, of some sort or another," Thoma said, "My father was a police officer, so I had that interest. That, or possibly as a lawyer; it would have been an interesting life."

"Heh. It would have been an ironic one if nothing else." It was too good of a barb to pass up. "Most people consider lawyers to be thieves anyway, so I guess you would have fit right in."
She tried to make it more of a joke than a zinger... she wasn't too well how she succeeded.

"I guess so," he laughed, "But...I wouldn't have been a criminal. Had I planned on that years earlier, then I wouldn't have gone into crime. There's that difference."

"Heh. Yeah. It would have been a lot better if you'd gone into the legal crime dealing than the kind nobody likes. But that's hindsight for ya." And it was, because it was always 20/20 and completely useless. Jess knew that well.
