The empty space on her plate was slowly increasing, while the opposite was happening in her stomach. It was a very nice feeling.
"I can't believe I'm saying this, but... is there anyone on the force you're sure you can trust?"

He smiled a little, taking away from his formerly fairly grim expression. He opened up about what he elt about the others.
"I don't trust anyone, because I know that they don't trust me. I don't think that's a very good way to work to find the man, or men, involved. But...there are some I distrust more than others; that would be a good place to begin."

"You're just going to have to be careful," Jess pointed out. "Because in the states, there's this thing called 'illegal wiretapping'. Which is, y'know, when you wiretap someone illegally. Sounds about like what you're aiming to do with this officer... But I don't really know how that works over here... I can imagine how they treat whistle blowers, though, so you might want to pick the ones you distrust carefully."

"Two days," he said, "I have some work to do in town first, tomorrow, and then I'll go back to Tokyo and start investigating. Well, we, if you still want to come," he said, taking his plate back if she had stopped, he figured he would eat his now.

"I already said that I was on board. If you keep asking like that, I'm going to start thinking that you don't like me or something." With that snide little remark, Jess leaned back in her chair, taking stock of Thoma and, by extension, the situation.
Was anything good really going to come of this? She wasn't sure... but there was really only one way to find out.

He nodded, "Ok. Hopefully our partnership can end up lasting for some time. The longer it lasts, the longer you're off the streets."
He finished his meal and pushed his plate aside a little so he could lean forward again, "Well, shall we leave?"

"Might as well." Jess nodded as she spoke. "There's nothing to hold me here."
She pushed her chair back and stood up to emphasize her point. She was starting to get antsy about all of this. It was time to do something, even just research, rather than just waiting around twiddling thumbs.

He pushed his chair back to stand and walked over, offering his arm once again, "Let's go, then. I can't promise much for the rest of today, or tomorrow, but after that, we can get to work."

Jess accepted his arm, for lack of anything better to do rather than any attempt to not be rude. She nodded once again. Even if Thoma didn't have anything to do, she could start searching newspapers and the like for the official version of the story... come to think of it, that probably wouldn't be a bad idea... She could check up on Thoma's story while she was at it.
"When the time comes, we'll get it done. Don't worry about it."

Zing. Jess bit back a wince at that one, hoping that it hadn't shown too much. Sure, it was a deception, but it was a deception necessary for both of their sakes. If word got out among the SPD that she was near, then she'd probably be caught before she could sneeze. That wouldn't end well for her. She liked breathing.
"Don't sweat it." She replied. "You can count on me for this one."
