This is purely informational, just something that came to me today, and I'm just curious on this fact, and how shipping characters together is going.
What constitutes it for you? Do you see a character and work it out with the player? Do you drop hints in-game and see if the other member picks up? Something else entirely?
Also, do you just settle sometimes for who you get? Like if it seems one sided, do you just give in and return it? Or is it like breeding animals; you look for a proper partner for your character, and refuse to ship until you find one?
To answer my own questions, I usually seem to work it out out of character with the member, but sometimes I just leave hints, see where things go without much care for it if happens or not.
As for the second question, I feel like I'm breeding; I'm looking for proper partners to my characters. Most of the time; McKenzie being the most prominent to the extent where no active character is good enough, I feel that strongly about some of my characters. I used her as the example because she's the only one I can think of offhand, without getting obscure, like Rescue Force members.
So yeah, just curious.

Ooh, interesting.
I think when I'm pairing characters together it depends which character it is.
Like Tamiko is really, really shallow and would only consider going out with someone who's a rider so she's not going to give anyone else a second look (Kazuma is only really an exception because it's plot worthy, which I shall get to in a second). Whereas Kyle or Suzie would give anyone a chance.
Plotwise there are some relationships that I do because they'd be interesting, like Ren and Sakura's.

Well, as someone who likes shipping...a lot...I suppose I'll weigh in here. Sometimes, I'll work something out OOC, but it'll only be the basics, like...which character with who...and a reason for them to meet. Then, we ride the RP wave, pretty much, and let it go wherever we take it. Sometimes, I'll even work in a few things to a new character that focus on the other character I'm making it for, in addition to my stuff, again, if I talk about it with the other person first. And occasionally, like with Kase and Damien, for example, we just RP it out and see what happens. xD In regards to breeding, usually I don't do that...because most of the time, settling for what I get, gets me exactly what I want. I think that's impressive, personally. And again, if there's any shipping ideas you want to talk about, PM me. That's not a subject I'm averse to.

I haven't really done anything like that in this game but in other games I'll have characters make advances and both me and the other player proceed to wherever it feels natural.

Plotwise there are some relationships that I do because they'd be interesting, like Ren and Sakura's. Isn't that mostly because of Rescue Force, though? Since she has a thing for him, but he's already married to Yuki?

Yeah, for context's sake me and Ren are on a Rescue Force RPG and the Sakura Ryusaki in that is ... much, much more f*ck*d up.
Basically she thinks Ren is attractive and a nice person, but she's confusing positive images of a male figure with an actual romantic attraction (Which it isn't) and wants to sleep with him. But that's it.
In this RP it's more idealistic as HH!Sakura trusts Ren because what he said about them being "the same" when they first met struck a chord. She was resistant at first but getting to know him made her more open to the idea of an actual relationship.
It's "interesting" to me because the character of Sakura Ryusaki is very different in both RP's.
On a similar note I do sometimes just RP and see how it goes, as we did with Yuki and Arthur's date, which didn't go to plan.

For more context, Ren (same character, more or less) and Yuki (same Yuki as here, not just a similarly named character; personality is vastly different here, though) got married from an arranged marriage as children, and then Sakura's misplaced emotions started to come out when the two were coming back from a Disaster in his Jet Falcon (or Rescue Wing, not sure which it was at the moment).
Yuki and Arthur was...it made sense in context, so it made sense to pursue that option, and was pretty fun to try.

Yeah, I quite like that thread because it really helped me define Arthur a little more. He's still young at heart but at the same time incredibly mature, a relationship didn't work out but he doesn't care, they're going to get along (They have to get along, their best friends are a couple).

Yeah, it makes perfect sense to me. It might be interesting as Ren and Sakura progress (especially with things after Broken) to see if their single date comes up again, or might be attempted again. Or Bridge...which would be a lot of fun to do again, even though she sunk that ship.
