A few hours later Cross was sitting in a hospital bed. His leg was in a plaster cast, he'd been in surgery for a long time and had only just come off the anaesthetic. He took out his phone and dialled in Nakida's number.

Her boyfriend was either an idiot or stupidly brave. She was stunned for a few moments, rolling to her side on the bed back home before she snapped.
"You idiot!" She screeched. "Are you trying to get yourself killed?"
"You're lucky you survived!" She snapped, ready to go into full-rant-mode with a hair trigger.
